NEW MEXICO TECH BROWN HALL BUILDING RENOVATION

SOCORRO, NM

In November of 2019, McClain + Yu Architecture & Design was engaged by New Mexico Tech (NMT) to undertake the design of a renovation to NMT’s historic Brown Hall. The construction of Brown Hall was completed in 1929. The building occupies the former building footprint of the ‘Old Main’ Building, which was completed as one of NMT’s first buildings in 1893. A portion of ‘Old Main’ survives and can be seen as the West face of Brown Hall. A number of renovations have occurred through the decades including:

(1) renovations of building HVAC systems, (2) interior partition renovations and notably, (3) a building infill project. The building infill project connects Brown Hall with Old Main and is presumed to have been built during the 1980s.

The design team has made the following primary recommendations for the renovation project: (1) Selective reconfiguration of the interior of the building to match current requirements (2) Replacement of building interior finishes – ceilings, flooring, wall finishes – unifying the historic building. (3) Replacement of exterior windows & doors with high performance, energy efficient systems. (4) Replacement of the HVAC systems with a single, high efficiency system (5) Upgrade of the Building Electrical Infrastructure (6) Replacement of Building Lighting Fixtures, upgrading to energy efficient LED fixtures.
