We wanted to share, perhaps after everyone else had a chance to share. It took some time to figure out what sort of thought our office wished to communicate.
New Mexico needs more physicians. More access to care. Stronger connections between education, research, and the communities that depend on both. The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and its The University of New Mexico School of Medicine expansion are a direct response to those conditions, and one of the most meaningful projects we have been part of.
This is not work we came to from the outside. Our practice is built here. We live and receive care here. The students who will learn in this building and the powerful professional they are to become are part of the same ecosystem we work within every day. That proximity shapes how we approach the design, not just delivering solutions, but as invested partners who understand what this institution carries in importance and what it is trying to become. We are aspirational together.
We are excited to partner with ZGF Architects. To help build new models of medical education. To build spaces where research, teaching, and clinical thinking can happen. To create an environment that attracts students and faculty who will stay, practice, and build their careers in New Mexico.
We recognize that UNM HSC is not a standalone institution, it is connected to hospitals, clinics, and communities across a state with distinct urban, rural, and Indigenous health contexts. The School of Medicine is an important hub and connector of that system. The design has to reflect the complexity and strengthen those ties. We are proud to be part of this work, not just as architects, but as people with a stake in what UNM HSC builds next. We commit to putting our best efforts into building an important health infrastructure of New Mexico. We could not be more proud of the leadership of New Mexico who are making this happen for all of our health care.
