RIO GRANDE GORGE BRIDGE

US HWY 64, TAOS COUNTY, NM

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a national landmark and won the American Institute of Steel Construction award for the “most Beautiful Steel Bridge” in the “Long Span” category in 1966.  This beautiful New Mexico landmark is, however, in dire need of renovation.  While it is one of the most beautiful, most visited places in the state, it has unfortunately become witness to suicides which have occurred over the years.  McClain + Yu sees a great need for design to transform the bridge. Such a transformation will bring higher levels of visitation and will enhance personal safety.  As part of a public participation process held by the NM Department of Transportation, McClain + Yu developed a strategy for the bridge and immediate environs to include a Suicide Deterrent System, Enhanced Visitor Safety, Windscreen and a Site Master Plan showing potential future development.
